CO Rep Claire Levy's support for NADA in 2011

"I will sponsor a bill to allow certified addiction counselors and behavioral health treatment providers to offer a very particular auricular acupuncture that is specifically intended to treat addiction and the side effects of post-traumatic stress syndrome.  Current law only allows acupuncturists and others whose licenses allow them to penetrate the skin to offer this treatment.  The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) trains people to do acupuncture in five sites in the ear that is a very promising complement to other treatment for substance abuse problems.  Because acupuncturists are rare in many parts of Colorado, the treatment cannot be offered in areas where there is great need. I would like to make the NADA auricular acupuncture protocol more widely available."

--Claire Levy, Colorado State Representative, House District 13

Rep. Levy's above statement is one of many legislative measures on her agenda for 2011.  You can read about her other economic, environmental, behavioral health and other measures that will increase access to treatment for Coloradans here:  http://clairelevy.org/?Newsletter:What_to_Expect_in_the_2011_Session

Our March Guidepoints 2011 issue will provide an update on the latest on the Colorado bill HB 1119, introduced by Rep. Levy, including more on the Acupuncture Association of Colorado's involvement with this bill has affected who will have access to NADA treatment.  HB 1119 was put forth by NADA member Dr. Elizabeth "Libby" Stuyt, who is a state psychiatric hospital director in Pueblo.
